RED TENT BELLY DANCE & FITNESS

Mission
Provide a home where women can cultivate the companionship of the body and mind through intelligent self-development, artistic expression, and ritual.

Intent
Women’s health depends on thoughtful community-supported activities, celebrations, and rituals as processes of prevention, healing, and rejuvenation. Red Tent Belly Dance and Fitness is the foundation for an open dialogue about the natural cycles of a woman’s life, from puberty and menstruation, to sexuality, motherhood, and menopause. We hope to bridge the gap between the competitive edge of a patriarchal society and the natural cycles of our lives that crave existence in a healthful, spiritualized context. As a loving community, we can reshape common misperceptions of body image, ability, and over-all personal value.

"Red Tent is a growing community of women who invest in one another’s process of discovery, where friendships are made and artists are born."©

Belly dance
(see homepage for schedule of classes)

Belly dance classes are designed to both accommodate and challenge beginning to intermediate students. Red Tent Belly Dance classes offer a teaching structure founded on basic principles of technique and skill, designed to give you a strong technical foundation as a platform for personal growth and self-expression. Red Tent Belly Dance is a balance of intelligence and intuition, where different learning styles are understood, nurtured, and challenged. Increasing strength and flexibilty are a given with Red Tent classes; fitness techniques are incorporated for safety and body-awareness.

Despite its grace and fluidity, belly dance is a complex and dynamic art that can be studied over a lifetime, but it is a natural dance endemic to the movement of the human body and the feminine spirit.

Red Tent appreciates dance as a high art of feminine culture, embracing ritual, education, celebration and healing, supporting the health and happiness of body and mind.

What to wear Please dress comfortably, and no, you do not have to show your belly! Most women prefer to wear clothing that accentuates movement and defines the upper from the lower body. You will be surprised at the difference a simple hip scarf or sash around the waist will make. Before you run out and invest in a pricy coin belt, consider thrift store shopping; Crossroads often has good deals and fancy treasures, or what about that old box of clothes in your closet? Be creative and find something that moves you.

Pilates is a dynamic balance of strengthening and stretching focused on the quality of movement. Utilizing the principles of core strength, spinal alignment, and stabilization with movement , Pilates increases over-all functional mobility. In addition to core strength and improved posture, Pilates increases flexibility, and balance, opens the joints and facilitates the relationship of the body and mind through breath and body awareness. Many variations of Pilates have emerged in today’s fitness industry. There are commonalities in these variations that can be traced to the classical mat work developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s.

Director

Amylea began actively studying dance and fitness in 1992 at Step 1 Dance and Fitness. She participated in numerous formats and trained under some of the finest instructors in Sacramento until the birth of her first child in 1996. 3 months after the birth of her daughter, Amylea discovered and was drawn in to the world of belly dance. "I had found a style of dance that I could practice throughout my life, a rhythm that touched my new life with my new baby girl. I knew that belly dance would ultimately make me a stronger woman and a better mother."

Amylea has been developing a safe and effective belly dance training program as well as a teacher training program for her students who aspire to be teachers of the art. Red Tent Belly Dance performs as a troupe throughout the Sacramento region and pursues positive relationships within the dance community for the social health of women and the strength of the dance community.

"I hope to one day open a cooperative dance and fitness studio art gallery with my students and other small business entrepreneurs, teachers, trainers, artists and dancers."

Amylea began her career as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor in 2001 and now teaches a wide variety of formats such as yoga, pilates, senior fitness, healthy back, stability ball, and body sculpting.
